As part of our Brain Healthy Cooking Program, the chefs at Senior Living Residences‘ communities create delicious and healthy recipes. This nutrition program is our spin on the Mediterranean Diet and aims to boost residents’ cognitive and physical health. In the colder months, chefs have a lot of fun creating bold and exciting soups and stews for our residents.
In honor of January being National Soup Month, we wanted to share some of our chefs’ favorite brain healthy bisque, soup, and stew recipes.
Creamy Roasted Cauliflower Soup
Rich without the guilt, this recipe’s thick base comes from a fresh puree of cauliflower and potato. Mix in a flavorful dose of nutmeg, which offers natural organic compounds that have been linked to protecting the brain from degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, and you have a dish you can feel good about! Therefore, this dish is great for vegetarians and vegans and can be made gluten-free.
Portuguese Sausage & Kale Soup
We’ve taken this resident favorite and given it a brain healthy twist by incorporating a robust portion of Mediterranean Diet staples: beans and fresh greens. Packing a wholesome punch, this soup is high in plant-based protein, which offers tons of vitamins. It cuts the risk of some chronic diseases that relate to dementia.

Cinnamon Swirl Creamy Sweet Potato Soup
Sweet and savory, this soup has it all. Researchers highlight cinnamon as “the miracle spice” and point to its natural anti-inflammatory properties and effectiveness in regulating blood sugar and reducing cholesterol. Because of its positive effects on aging, we have cinnamon on every dining table as a sugar substitute.
